- The 50s and 60s were just an insane period to be a scientist. You could do just about anything, the money was there, the reason (cold war) and the ability. It was a golden age for STEM, it's a pity it's become so 'normal'. I mean we walk around with super computers in your pocket, it makes science less spectacular. This entire capability was obsolete before it was commissioned, nuclear boats, with silo launched ICMBs were the norm just 3 years later. This would be nuts, surface the sub for what must have been 30+ minutes to remove then set up and launch the missile. Read more comments
